Chef Chris Shepherd has a tendency to get people’s attention. Between the launch of a new retail business, public speaking engagements, a massive non-profit, culinary consultations, wine blog, and a f*cking TV show, he’s speaking louder than ever. So, when he approached us to create a verbal and visual identity for his personal brand, we knew it was going to be bold (spicy, even). More than anything, we knew it was going to need to be full of heart—a patented Chris Shepherd bear hug in brand form.

The first question we had to answer—how do we tie all of Chris’s endeavors together? He’s always cooking up something new. He’s got a restless heart and an insatiable curiosity, and by highlighting the ‘is’ in various scenarios, we drove home the fact that there’s always more fun to come—and more products, businesses, and creativity to promote in a playful way.

Chris’s personality is unique in that he’s equal parts bold and welcoming—not afraid to speak his mind, ruffle a few feathers, and offer up that aforementioned bear hug faster than you can cook a steak tartare. When we started researching typefaces, Degular stood out as a reflection of those qualities. It’s sturdy enough to stand on its own and friendly enough to serve as a platform for others—much like the man himself.
